Community Resources Statement

Child care centers, family child care homes, and school-age programs are part of a larger community. Sharing and accessing community resources helps connect families and children to a range of local services and opportunities. Maintaining a current list of community agencies that provide support, education, and services gives you ready access to information and experiences that may benefit the families, children, and staff in your program.

Community and Referral Resources

Accessing and sharing resources helps connect families, children, and staff members to the community. These community connections are opportunities to participate in events, workshops, and community groups that offer beneficial information, support, and services. Local libraries, organizations, museums, and agencies are a few examples of the resources available within a community. Others include:

  • Early intervention or special education services
  • Mental health services
  • Social service agencies
  • Child advocacy agencies
  • Local cultural centers
  • Educational resources for children or their parents
  • Community colleges
  • Job training opportunities
  • Pediatric services and medical offices
  • Local family support organizations

What does the documentation look like?

A written statement that describes:

  • Resources available in your community, including referral resources and early intervention / special education resources
  • How you select and update these resources
  • How resources are shared with families and staff members

You may use photos in addition to your statement to show how resources are made available to families (example: photo of a bulletin board with resource information displayed).

How can you tell if you're on the right track?

Your written statement clearly explains how your program:

  • Regularly seeks new resources
  • Gathers information about community events and resources (example: websites, newspapers, local flyers and bulletins)
  • Communicates these resources to families
  • Encourages families to share concerns, as well as resources they may need or find helpful
  • Observes children in your program and communicates any concerns with families
  • Connects families to resources that are specific to their needs or to the needs of their child (example: early intervention services and organizations)

Where can you learn more?

Contact your local child care resource center for assistance in finding and accessing resources. These resource centers offer guidance on the types of resources available to support the families and children in your program.
